Peacock Announces Streaming Release Date for ‘Obsession’
Kari Parker’s hit horror film “Obsession” begins streaming on Peacock on July 17.
Parker’s debut film centers on Pierre (Michael Johnston), a man deeply in love with his colleague Nikki (Inde Navarrette) but afraid to confess his feelings. After he makes a wish that Nikki would love him more than anything else in the world, she suddenly develops a dangerous obsession with him. True to the horror genre, the consequences for everyone involved prove fatal.
The film’s digital release was delayed due to its massive success in theaters. To date, “Obsession” has grossed $370 million worldwide on a budget of less than $1 million. This makes it the highest-grossing release in Focus Features’ history; the studio acquired the film for $14 million following the Toronto International Film Festival last year.
“Obsession” achieved great success thanks to strong word-of-mouth. It earned an ‘A-’ grade in CinemaScore polls and a 94% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. After an impressive domestic opening weekend gross of $17.2 million, the film’s earnings grew to $23.9 million in its second weekend and $27.4 million in its third—an unprecedented trajectory.
There is already widespread speculation regarding the film’s prospects during awards season. Variety’s Clayton Davis has written about how ‘Obsession’ might follow the blueprint established by the success of Jordan Peele’s ‘Get Out’—which won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay: “The elements are all there. It is a box-office cultural phenomenon; a star-making performance, a director with a once-in-a-generation original story, and a distributor with everything to gain by betting on it.”
